Freudenthal Home-Based Healthcare is proud to announce Dr. William “Bill” Gondring as the December Aging Well Award winner! At the age of 87, Dr. Gondring exemplifies a life dedicated to service, excellence, and leadership in both the medical field and the U.S. armed forces.
Dr. Gondring’s remarkable career spans more than five decades as a renowned orthopedic surgeon and a retired U.S. Navy Captain. He served on the U.S. Naval medical teams during pivotal times in Vietnam, El Salvador, Bosnia, and Croatia. Specializing in trauma and combat-related injuries, Dr. Gondring’s expertise and innovative surgical techniques have saved countless lives and set new standards for rehabilitation protocols.
After attending medical school at Washington University in St. Louis and completing a demanding residency at Barnes Hospital, Dr. Gondring built a reputation for skill and dedication. His military service included performing high-stakes surgeries in active combat zones, where his leadership and knowledge as a landmine expert were invaluable.
In his civilian career, Dr. Gondring founded one of the first orthopedic practices in St. Joseph, working with Mosaic Life Care to provide care for sports injuries, degenerative joint diseases, and trauma cases. His legacy is marked by a lifelong commitment to improving the lives of his patients and serving veterans and active military members.
Even now, Dr. Gondring continues to inspire with his active lifestyle and zest for life. Known for his competitive spirit, you might catch him on the pickleball court at the Recreation Center—and don’t be surprised if he plays to win!
